Windows 7 in the real world

Windows 7 performance has much improved over Vista, like faster startups and better power management. CPUs, chipsets, storage controllers, display adapters, external peripherals, drivers, and third-party programs are all tied to an operating system, because operating system does not exist in a vacuum. If the fascinating drivers and best hardware is present then any modern operating system can run with impressive performance and reliability.

With a bad BIOS, flaky motherboard, and a buggy driver, users computing experience will quickly curled into horribleness. When the testing of Windows 7 pre-Beta version was going on by many persons, then Windows Experience Index (WEI) provided a broad-brush measure of performance. The other point is the stability index, a 1-10 rating found in the Reliability Monitor section of the Windows 7 Action Center. Then it was realized that Windows Experience Index (WEI) actually does a pretty good job of predicting how a system will perform.

When the Windows 7 was tested on ten different computers, the report collected can be explained as- Dell XPS 420, a desktop workhorse, when a clean install of Windows 7 Professional x64 is done, then Windows Experience Index becomes 5.9. The stability index of this machine was from 5.20 to 6.79. This machine doesn’t crash, sleeps and wakes up reliably. Then the next one, Dell Studio Hybrid, a very small desktop PC, when upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate x86.Windows Experience Index of this machine was found to be 3.1. From the Windows Experience Index, it can be assumed that it has no dedicated memory for graphics and instead sets aside system memory for the task, and the integrated Intel graphics on this machine are weak for anything more than everyday business computing.

After this, Lenovo ThinkPad X300, an ultra light notebook, its Windows Experience Index was 2.9. Then Latitude XT Tablet/Touch notebook, Windows Experience Index was 3.5. The next one was Dell Studio XPS 1340, upgraded to Windows 7 Home Premium, its Windows Experience Index becomes 4.7. After an upgrade install of Windows 7,  two problems was noticed with this machine.

These are machine would resume after sleep, but the wired network connection refused to work until after a complete restart. Then Dell XPS 410, Media Center PC, when Windows 7 Home Premium x64 was installed on it, its Windows Experience Index was 5.8. After that HP Pavilion Elite m9300t (Media Center), upgraded to Windows 7 Home Premium x86, its Windows Experience Index was 4.8. Then HP Pavilion Slimline S3500, its Windows Experience Index was 5.3. The next one, Apple Mac Mini (2009 model), Windows on a Mac, its Windows Experience Index was 4.4. The Snow Leopard setup disk contained all the drivers needed for Windows 7, was experienced equally fast on common tasks, when the switching between OS X and Windows 7 is done. Under both operating system the Nvidia GPU was able to drive two full HD displays (1920×1200) simultaneously.
